Forty years ago, after one of my concerts, Adrian Boult told me that if I continued to conduct like that I’d become a cripple, and that I must take lessons in the Alexander Technique. Today I am still having lessons – as with music, there is no end to the learning process. It affects not only the use of the body, but also one’s views of oneself and one’s behaviour. The major music colleges have for many years recognised the benefits of offering the Alexander Technique alongside music lessons, both for individuals and in groups. For example, the Royal Academy of Music offers all musicians at least 20 private lessons during their first year of training. The Alexander Technique is deceptively simple. By learning how to release excess tension, your movement becomes freer, smoother, faster, more expressive and coordinated. In so doing, your thoughts become clearer and you are more able to coordinate the complex array of thoughts, emotions, movements and relationships which are required when playing music.
